A drug starts its long journey from the lab until it is administered to the patient, passes through the hands of pharmacy professionals at various stages like discovery, synthesis or isolation and purification, testing for positive or toxicological effects, formulation development, manufacturing and testing of drugs and finally medication management in the hospital.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) is an undergraduate academic program that is meant to dispense adequate knowledge, necessary skills to practice the profession of pharmacy. The program is a versatile interdisciplinary program preparing graduates with a sound knowledge and understanding of the science, technology and practice of pharmacy. The program follows a semester pattern. The core subjects include Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis (Chemistry of Drugs), Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmacology and Pharmacy Practice.

The area of pharmaceutics deals with the formulation, assessment, pharmacokinetic and biopharmaceutical assessment . It includes the design, preparation, formulation and testing of drug delivery systems and pertains to the scientific and technological aspects of the design and manufacture of dosage forms.

The subjects that are covered by this department for the undergraduate students include dispensing and pharmacy, pharmaceutical technology, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, formulation and industrial pharmacy. The practical training in these subjects help the students to develop skills on assessing the physicochemical properties developing formulations based on the nature of the drug , disease and route of administration, determining the stability of the formulations and calculation of the pharmacokinetic parameters.


All of the medications are either naturally occurring or are lab developed synthetic organic compounds, either small organic molecules or biologics while some drug substances may be inorganic or even organ metallic compounds. This concerns itself with the study of design, synthesis as well as elucidation of chemical pathways responsible for eliciting the desired and undesired effects of bioactive molecules.


Pharmacology is the study of the therapeutic value and/or potential toxicity of chemical agents on biological systems. It is a science that is basic not only to pharmacy, but also to medicine, nursing and dentistry.

Pharmacological studies range from those that examine the effects of chemical agents on subcellular mechanisms, to those that deal with the potential hazards of pesticides and herbicides, to those that focus on the treatment and prevention of major diseases with drug therapy.. The subjects that are covered by this department include human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology.

The Pharmacy department at Vishveshwarya Group of Institutions has one laboratory each for anatomy and physiology and pharmacology. During anatomy and physiology practical sessions, the students are familiarized with the human skeletal and other body systems. They are also trained in the determination and interpretation of hematological and physiological parameters. Most of the pharmacology practical sessions are done in relevance to the study of drug action on biological systems. These are mostly done using isolated tissue preparations.


Pharmacognosy is an integral component of pharmacy subjects and the term ‘pharmacognosy’.It has been coined from two Greek words pharmkon (means drug) and gnosis (means knowledge). Pharmacognosy deals with the study of crude drugs obtained from natural sources like plant, animal and minerals. The subject mainly focuses on various aspects of crude drug evaluation which includes physicochemical standardization, morphological, histological studies, extraction for the isolation of medicinal principles followed by phytochemical evaluation for identifying its medicinal use.

The department of Pharmacy at Vishveshwarya group of Institutions is involved in the preparation of herbal formulations, stability studies and also standardization of various ayurvedic formulations available in the market. The subject of Pharmacognosy is taught in the second, third and the final year of the bachelor of pharmacy program. It has the following major divisions: Basic pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, Industrial Pharmacognosy and Phytopharmaceuticals (Applied Pharmacognosy). The pharmacy department also guides the students in the cultivation of medicinal plants and conducting experiments related to extraction and isolation of active principles.



    This topic deals with the basis for design and manufacture of delivery systems with predictable outcomes and ensuring the absence of toxicological effects, formulation development, manufacturing and testing of drugs and ultimately medication management in the hospitals. Vesicular formulations like liposomes, ethosomes, pharmacosomes and gel based formulations like nanogel, emulgel etc .are developed & tested for transdermal use whereas liquisolid formulations are developed for oral use with an aim to enhance bioavailability & colon specific drug release.


    The focus areas of research in this field include Analytical Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry and Phytochemistry. Stress degradation, bioanalytical studies and metabolite identification studies are the major areas under analytical chemistry.


    This is a fast evolving area of pharmaceutical research in the Indian pharmaceutical industry. With the multiplying number of diseases and newer and newer medicines coming to the market, the role of a pharmacist in patient care is becoming ever important.

    The department of pharmacy at Vishveshwarya group of Institutions has an active clinical pharmacy faculty team that works in collaboration with clinicians for improved patient care as well as in clinical research.


    There is huge scope for research in the department of pharmacology since preclinical & clinical research is essential component of drug discovery research.There is a fully fledged animal house located within the Vishveshwarya group of Institutions that to the needs of the entire campus.The students and the faculty utilize the animal house for the in vivo studies.


    The importance of herbal drug research is now broadly realized and recognized across the globe. The herbal research in the department of pharmacy at Vishveshwarya group of Institutions mainly focuses on various aspects of crude drug evaluation which includes physicochemical standardization, histological studies, extraction, phytochemical studies and Biological evaluation. Such research provides a genuine interest in the isolation and characterization of phytoconstituents. The research also follows with quantification of the same with various methods like HPTLC, LC-MS, GC-MS etc. The biological evaluation of the extracts and the phytochemicals involve antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, anticancer, antimicrobial, immunomodulant and anthelminthic studies. The department is also involved in the isolation of essential oil from various plants and their phytochemical and pharmacological evaluation.


    The Pharmacy Practice is the upcoming field that bridges the pharmacy department at Vishveshwarya Group of Institutes with the actual practices being carried out in the hospitals. It is a clinical oriented academic department located in the hospital and provide excellent didactic and experiential training necessary to become well-rounded practitioners.
